Top kitchen appliance trends for 2017

Today’s kitchen appliances are stylish and smart. From fridge freezers in luxurious colours and finishes to smart ovens, there seems to be no limit to what appliances can now do. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation or need to upgrade, read our expert’s round up of the top kitchen appliance trends of 2017 worth considering.

Sleek Black Finishes

Black glass is set to be the biggest kitchen appliance trend in 2017,” says Wayne Jennings, Group General Manager of merchandise at The Good Guys. “Black finishes provide a sleek and stylish alternative to stainless steel.”

With minimalist lines, black fridges, ovens and dishwashers add a touch of sophistication to a contemporary kitchen. They blend seamlessly with this year’s popular dark timbers and moody colour palettes, allowing you to achieve a cohesive look.

“One of the most appealing black fridges on the market is the Hisense Glass French Door fridge,” says Wayne. “If you’re buying a family-sized fridge this one has big storage capacity and the glass front makes it easy to keep clean of fingerprints.

#HisenseHack: Keep your black appliances looking shiny by using a soft, microfiber cloth and mild soap. No need for harsh cleaners.

Smart Appliances

Kitchen appliances are not only becoming sleeker and more stylish, they’re getting smarter too.

“Automation in appliances has reached a whole new level,” says Kate Lansdale, Marketing Campaign Manager at Appliances Online. “You’ll find ovens with wifi connectivity that show how your dinner is progressing. You can ever alter the temperature from your smartphone when you’re in another room.”

Convenience aside, intelligent appliances give home cooks far greater confidence in the kitchen.

“Automation in ovens can help take the guesswork out of cooking,” says Kate. “So whether you’re preparing a roast, baking a cake, or a slow cooked dish, it allows you to achieve the best result with less effort.”

Statement Brights

Homeowners looking to add character to their cooking spaces should look to eye-catching appliances, says Wayne. “Benchtop appliances are no longer hidden away in cupboards – they’re an important and highly visible, part of our kitchens.

The latest designs provide an instant injection of colour and personality in the kitchen in a fun, functional way. Think toasters, kettles and blenders in pretty pastels. Or vintage styles in brushed metallics and paintbox brights. Even stunning futuristic designs that resemble works of art are becoming popular.

#HisenseHack: A toaster, kettle, and blender all in the same high-impact colours will brighten your space and provide a cohesive look.

Multi-functional kitchen appliances

All-in-one kitchen appliances, which allow you to create different gourmet meals every night of the week in one machine, are growing in popularity. They’re not only space-savers, but they save you a considerable amount of time, says Wayne. “They do everything from chopping and whisking, to steaming and cooking, making food preparation a breeze.”

Take your pick from models that offer the functionality of a rice cooker, slow cooker, pressure cooker and steamer in one. You could try a set-and-forget style that can be programmed to do time-consuming preparation jobs.

There are also ‘healthy’ devices so you can enjoy all manner of fried treats without the guilt.

Steam Cooking

Steam cooking made its mark last year and according to Kate Lansdale, continues to be a huge kitchen trend in 2017. Now, as well as steam ovens you can also find combi models offering both steam and convection cooking. Microwaves aren’t immune either with added steam functionality.

It’s easy to see the appeal of steam. “Cooking with steam is healthier as it retains the nutrients in your food and intensifies flavours. It also won’t dry food out. You can also steam a wide variety of food from roasts to desserts,” she says.

“As an added bonus, many of the latest steam ovens offer a steam-cleaning function, which heats the interior of the unit with steam to loosen stubborn residue, which you wipe away”.

Contemporary all-white kitchens

Elegant and fresh, a white kitchen is classic. Especially when bathed in natural light. But white cabinets, white appliances and white countertops all together can look boring.

“The way to make all-white look beautiful is to choose quality finishes and modern appliances so it all looks intentional and not out-of-date,” says Sydney-based Interior Designer, Karen Akers, who specialises in residential projects.

“Even though I love colour, I think an all-white kitchen with modern, streamlined appliances look great and it’s ideal for small spaces. I also like adding texture and contrast with dark flooring, open shelves and plant life. Or a pop of colour or black with small appliances.”

“If you’re not a fan of the classic all-white kitchen, white appliances work brilliantly with navy, black or subdued colours like mint or grey,” added Karen.

Timeless Stainless Steel

For those that love their stainless steel appliances, fear not, this finish is always on trend because it goes with everything.

With timeless appeal, stainless steel appliances suit a variety of kitchen styles, from industrial to rustic and everything in between.

The robust, non-porous and hygienic material originally used in commercial kitchens will remain a statement piece in your kitchen for many years to come.
