When you buy a fridge, you want it to do three things: keep food cool, be energy efficient and stand the test of time. But no matter how top of the range your fridge is you also need to do your part. Follow our 5 tips below to look after your fridge (and your food).
1. Don’t over-fill
If you over-pack your fridge it makes it difficult for the air to circulate and to keep food cool. This causes the motor to work overtime, which leads to faster wear and tear and potential food spoilage.
Avoid over-filling your fridge by purchasing one that suits your household lifestyle. 2. Everything in its right place
Knowing where to store items in the fridge is important for food safety and freshness. Keep raw meat and seafood on the bottom shelf to prevent drips and don’t forget to utilise the crisper draw for produce that requires higher humidity such as fruit and vegetables.
3. Ice, ice baby
To extend the life of your food, your fridge should be set to between 1°C and 4°C. A fridge set too hot or cold can cause your food to spoil and allow bacteria to growth. Fridges with a Multi Air Flow feature help to keep a constant temperature throughout the fridge so your food stays fresher for longer.
4. Cover Food
The golden rule of refrigeration is food must always be covered. Uncovered food is prone to drying out, absorbing food odours and can cause cross-contamination. Store those leftovers in an air-tight container.
5. Food Life Expectancy
Understanding how long food can be kept for is vital to your fridge’s health. Typically, raw meats and poultry should only be left in the fridge for 1-2 days, so if you aren’t ready to cook them simply pop them in the freezer. Cooked leftovers should be thrown out after 3-4 days.
Tip: Fridges with slide-out shelves give you the flexibility to accommodate different-sized items in the main fridge compartment.
