World Cup Wrap: Wednesday 27 June

Australia’s World Cup hopes were extinguished last night in a teeth-grindingly frustrating 2-0 defeat at the hands (or feet, rather) of the already-eliminated Peru side.

We break down Australia’s loss against Peru, plus some memorable moments from the week in today’s World Cup Wrap. Read on:

On the bright side, Mile Jedinak’s beard was in fine form.

Much will be said (and has been already) of the role that Australia coach Bert van Marwijk’s rigid strategy played in Australia’s disappointing loss against Peru, with many feeling that his emphasis on defensive play limited the Socceroos opportunities on goal throughout their three matches.

And last night’s match was indeed tough to watch (tougher, we’re sure, to experience). Even the second-half addition of Tim Cahill and up-and-comer Daniel Arzani failed to turn things around for the ‘Roos, already trailing two points behind in the first five minutes of the second half.

While Australia’s hopes are dashed for the 2018 World Cup, it’s hard to hold it against an overjoyed Peru team – celebrating their first at the World Cup since 1978.

With Australia out, who are you throwing your support behind?

Last week’s clash between Portugal and Spain came to an abrupt halt at one point – but not due to injury or controversy. Play was paused while Spanish players, G.Pique & Isco, showed they had a soft side when they rescued a small bird that had come onto the field. We’re not crying, you’re crying.
